Amherst: Golf Capital of New Hampshire

Amherst NH - Golf Capital of New Hampshire - www.thefellsatamherst.comNew Hampshire has never been much of a golf destination, given the five months of snow cover, but the sport has its own capital within the Granite State: Amherst.

The town's four courses – Amherst Country Club, Buckmeadow Golf Club, Ponemah Green Family Golf Center and Souhegan Woods Golf Club – may not be the state's biggest or most popular, but no other town in the state has as many courses or as many golf holes as the 54 in Amherst, with its pair of 18- and nine-hole courses each.

In fact, only one other town in New Hampshire comes close: Greenland, with three courses and 45 holes. The rest of the state fights for the final spot on New Hampshire's golf podium.

How? Why? The simple answer is that each Amherst course is open to the public, affordable and respected in the community.

Golf started in Amherst in 1965 with the opening of Amherst Country Club on Ponemah Road. Acres of open land led to the development of Buckmeadow in 1981 and Ponemah Green and Souhegan Woods in 1992.
